History

The Sangtam Tribe is one of the major tribes of Nagaland with its rich cultural identity and heritage. The vast majority of sangtams inhabits in two eastern Districts of Nagaland namely: Kiphire and Tuensang Districts; and few others living in Dimapur District as well. Animism was their primal religion and Shifting cultivation was one of their profession and source of survival. The Sangtam tribes are community people and loved to live in peace and harmony with their community and neighboring community as well.

The United Sangtam Baptist Lithroti (Churches) Ashimükhong (Association) USBLA was formed in the month of November, 1946. It is called united because, the Sangtams are living in two Districts of Nagaland and in between are other Naga Tribes that inhabits the land. The Associations Logo clearly depicts the connections created through the Cross of Christ Jesus between Sangtams.

Sangtams have changed their animistic beliefs to belief in Christ Jesus after the arrival of Christianity. With the passing years, other Christian denominations like, Roman Catholic and Christian Revival groups penetrated the Sangtam land. However, the Baptist Christians are the majority and the religious Apex Body USBLA is under the umbrella of the Baptists denomination namely; Nagaland Baptist Church Council which is one of the constituent members of Baptist World Alliance.
